When Tim Burton relaunched the popular superhero as a marquee name in 1989, the tangled webs of both the DC Extended Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe were a distant glimmer in Hollywood’s eye, and the last time a superhero film had topped the box office had been way back in 1981 (“Superman II”; its 1983 followup, “Superman III,” didn’t crack that year’s top 10). Burton’s “Batman” eventually spawned four films…and three stars, with original star Michael Keaton only sticking around for two entries, followed by single showings for both Val Kilmer and George Clooney....

The nature of that extent varies widely, though — not just around the globe or between red and blue states, but also across the zip codes that cinch individual cities into clear socio-economic divides. It varies between the people who survived the virus, and the people who loved people who didn’t; the people who lost some part of themselves, and the people who rode out the storm in relative peace; the people who risked their lives by fighting the problem, and the people who risked everyone’s lives by pretending that it didn’t exist....

Like many other shows stuck in production limbo last spring, “The Good Fight” didn’t end last season quite the way it intended. The show certainly left on a memorable note, but to describe the details for the uninitiated is to spoil one of the great reveals in recent history. If anything, navigating the void left by three unfinished episodes made series co-creators Robert and Michelle King more determined than ever to tell a full, complete arc in Season 5....

That’s more or less the takeaway from the final episodes of HBO Max’s “The Staircase,” which exploded a wobbly real-life murder case into a fascination of true-crime-ish television. Is Antonio Campos’ drama series true crime at all if there maybe wasn’t even a crime truly committed? Across eight episodes, writer/director Campos and writer/producer/co-showrunner Maggie Cohn reopened the Pandora’s box of the Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) case, in which a well-liked Durham, North Carolina novelist and would-be local politico was accused, convicted, and then cleared of the killing of his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette)....

Set during the 19th-century somewhere along the east coast of the United States, “The World to Come” follows the acting foursome as they battle the elements and isolation. Waterston, who also provides a literary voiceover in the form of epistolary diary entries, plays Abigail, grieving from a recent loss while eking out a pastoral life with her husband, Dyer (Affleck). She’s thrown for an emotional tailspin when she meets Tallie (Kirby), with whom she sparks an instant attraction, leading to a stolen romance that’s complicated by Tallie’s possessive husband, Finney (Abbott)....

Per today’s announcement, TIFF hopes to “bring the theatrical experience back to life and continue its reputation as both a leader in amplifying under-represented cinematic voices and a bellwether for programming award-winning films from around the globe.” It remains to be seen, however, who can actually show up to see those titles. High-profile studio titles like “Dune” were not expected to be available on the festival’s virtual platform. Nevertheless, in a joint interview with IndieWire, TIFF co-heads Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente said that all films had been invited to premiere both in-person and virtually for Canadian audiences, while the press and industry screening platform launched last year will remain in place....

Using chart positions to determine relative revenues is an imperfect gauge of success and “Maverick” does remain on top at both iTunes and Google Play. What makes “Thor” stand out is, unlike “Maverick,” it can also be seen free streaming for subscribers at Disney+. iTunes has “Thor” at #2, while Google Play puts it third.
