After a roundabout declaration of love, she’s ready to walk back to shore, unburdened from having to keep up the facade of someone who’s fine keeping her feelings at a manageable simmer. But before she can even get back to the boat where her roommate Kate (Emma Sidi) is waiting, Tom sloshes after her and the two kiss to the hoots and hollers of (almost) everyone looking on. As a season-capping moment, it’s an interesting counterpoint to the slow “will they-won’t they” beat that brought the first season to a close....

The official synopsis for the film reads: “Set in the near future, ‘Swan Song’ is a powerful, emotional journey told through the eyes of Cameron (Ali), a loving husband and father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Close) to shield his family from grief. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he learns more about life and love than he ever imagined....

Robert Pattinson was certainly up for the task, as the former “Twilight” star spent a decade honing his acting chops with arthouse films like “Good Time” and “Cosmopolis,” but “The Batman” still posed its own unique challenge. Pattinson is significantly younger than his predecessor Ben Affleck was when he donned the cape and cowl, so his performance would inevitably differ from Affleck’s grisled take on the character. For their interpretation, Affleck and director Matt Reeves mined both fiction and recent history for examples of men who come into vast wealth at very young ages to craft a blueprint for their version of Bruce Wayne....

Dropping the pretense of fiction makes “The Courtship” an intriguing interpretation of what the naked (or at least semi-nude) pleasures of costume dramas actually are: namely, the costumes, the countryside, pretty horses, and prettier people. But it’s also an interesting test of what’s required to make an onscreen project look properly period. “Obviously the audience for a dating show is not going to be the exact same audience for ‘Bridgerton,’” costume designer Tom Rogers told IndieWire....

Some storytelling blunders are the result of adapting an acclaimed novel beyond its pages. Others feel guided by forces beyond creative intentions, like, say, a streaming service with an originals brand forever tied to one landmark series. Either way, viewing fatigue is real, and bloat shouldn’t be tolerated, especially for serious, saddening fare like “The Handmaid’s Tale” that’s already stretched itself rather thin. And yet here I am, telling you to be patient, plow through the first five episodes, and revel in the bounty waiting on the other side....

“The Harder They Fall” is the latest directorial effort from writer-director Jeymes Samuel. The filmmaker was behind the 2013 short film “They Die by Dawn,” a Western starring Rosario Dawson and Giancarlo Esposito. Samuel wrote “The Harder They Fall” with Boaz Yakin, best known as the director of “Remember the Titans” and screenwriter of “Now You See Me.” The official synopsis for “The Harder They Fall” from Netflix reads: “When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge....

According to the Venice Film Festival, Almodóvar’s “The Human Voice” is set to run for approximately 30 minutes. The festival describes the film as “a very free adaptation of the original stage play by Jean Cocteau, with which Pedro Almodóvar has been dreaming of for decades. It tells the story of a desperate woman (Swinton), who waits for the phone call of the lover who has just abandoned her. It marks Pedro Almodóvar’s first time shooting in English....

DiMartino announced the news Wednesday morning in an open letter on his website, which can be read here. “When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm....

Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” takes place during the Hundred Years’ War in 14th century France. The film dramatizes the last legally-sanctioned duel in France’s history, which took place between the knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) and his best friend and squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver). The former accused the latter of raping his wife, Marguerite de Thibouville (Comer). Here’s what IndieWire’s B+ review out of this year’s Venice Film Festival had to say about the film: “Keeping true to its title in function and form, “The Last Duel” is at constant odds with itself....

“It’s gonna be like something you haven’t seen before,” Fraser recently said of his performance. “That’s really all I can tell you…The wardrobe and costume was extensive, seamless, cumbersome. This is certainly far removed from anything I’ve ever done but not to be coy…I do know it’s going to make a lasting impression.” That lasting impression may leave Fraser well-positioned to compete for Oscar gold next year. Zemeckis reimagined Roald Dahl’s book for his 2020 release, and in doing so he changed the physicality of the villainous characters. The witches appear in Zemeckis’ film with three-fingered hands, which Deadline notes is similar to the limb abnormality ectrodactyly, otherwise known as “split hand.” The witches in Dahl’s book are described as having “claws instead of fingernails” and are shown in an illustration on the first edition cover to have all five fingers....

The trailer for what is being dubbed “Unsolved Mysteries Volume 2” emphasizes what makes the series so compelling: atmosphere. Glimpses of the episodes are shown, but it’s unclear if everything we’re seeing involves the actual people, or if we’re getting our first glimpse at outright re-enactments of things. If you’re a fan of the original series, hosted by Robert Stack, you know the re-enacted scenes were part of the charm and were absent in the first half of the reboot....
