Fifteen years later, the film — which literally ends with its equine hero riding off into the sunset, the point of the entire movie — inspired a strange followup: a computer-animated Netflix series about a plucky tween girl who befriends a wild mustang named Spirit and basically folds him into her (domesticated!) life on the American frontier. The series, entitled “Spirit Riding Free,” is readying for its ninth season, to say nothing of the specials, spinoff series, and short-form selections that have accompanied it....

Per its official synopsis, the film “explores what it means to live as a being without status or security, following three strays — Zeytin, Nazar, and Kartal — as they embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture. Zeytin, fiercely independent, embarks on adventures through the city at night; Nazar, nurturing and protective, easily befriends the humans around her; while Kartal, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site, finds companions in the security guards who care for her....

Poor Shiv Roy. There are ignominious speeches and then there’s what happened to Shiv during her first meeting addressing the employees of Waystar Royco as the company’s new president. In the most recent episode of HBO’s “Succession,” while trying to reassure the masses that the future of the company was stable, Shiv’s speech was, in effect, shouted down by her brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong), utilizing speakers playing Nirvana’s “Rape Me” — a reference to the company’s previously hidden history of mistreating sex workers, migrant workers, and women in general — to drown out his sister’s words....

Never has a ride in a luxury automobile across the Italian countryside at freaking sunset felt so agonizingly unending. Yet as the Roy siblings finally gathered to speak as honestly and directly as their abusive upbringing could allow, as they forged a bulletproof plan to wrest the company under their control, as they made a plan to “kill” (metaphorically, though literally wasn’t off the table) their toxic father once and for all — you knew it was taking too long....

According to its 100 percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Bear” is a flawless show. (We know, we know: It’s a flawed and subjectively interpreted thumbs-up/thumbs-down system.) Still, IndieWire had a few clarification questions for creator and co-showrunner (and director) Christopher Storer. We caught up with the busy “Ramy” alum via email, and received some surprisingly (for this business) satisfying answers to our burning questions. Get your Ove Gloves ready....

It’s a question that kept bouncing around my head during last week’s Investors Day call, where the Walt Disney Company put on quite a show, bombarding critics and fans alike with news of pending content, most of which draws from the organization’s endless troves of intellectual property. “The Wobblies” tells the story of the radical labor union the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as IWW and nicknamed The Wobblies. Founded in Chicago in 1905, the union championed the formation of “one big union” for all unskilled laborers, regardless of their race and gender. Combining rare archival footage, illuminating interviews with Union members, period artwork, and songs written by activist Joe Hill, filmmakers Stewart Bird and Deborah Shaffer hope a re-release will speak to the same themes labor unions are facing today....

The series, following a Black family in the 1950s who move into an all-white California suburb only to experience racism and supernatural events, was a passion project for Little Marvin. More importantly, it offered him the opportunity to examine the historical creation of Old Hollywood and transform it by adding in Black cast members. “That was one of the most freeing and rewarding pieces of the entire journey. Getting a chance to not only pay homage to my favorite films of that era, but also to reclaim that frame,” he said....

Brett Goldstein channeled a bit of Roy Kent energy to transform into Hercules — much to even his parents’ surprise. The “Ted Lasso” Emmy winner detailed his “Thor: Love and Thunder” post-credits cameo in an interview with Variety, explaining that he even had to convince his folks to check out the Marvel movie without revealing his surprise appearance. “I didn’t tell anyone because Marvel put a chip in my neck that said ‘If you talk about this you’re dead,’” Goldstein quipped....

Releasing a television show about a fictional epidemic in the middle of a real-world pandemic was always going to be tricky, and initial reactions to “Utopia” have reflected as much. “What I’ve seen so far on social media is that there’s a certain segment [of viewers], which we always knew about, who just don’t want to see anything that has to do with a pandemic,” showrunner Gillian Flynn said in an interview Tuesday morning with IndieWire....

Appearing on a panel for the show at New York Comic-Con (via Insider), showrunner Charlie Grandy explained that the decision to omit Scooby-Doo from the series was an attempt to differentiate the adult show from the family friendly property that inspired it. “When we were going into the show and thinking about adapting it, we wanted to be respectful,” Grandy said. “We didn’t want to just kind of take these beloved characters and put them in outrageous or gross situations and say, ‘Isn’t it crazy you did that to Velma?...

It’s one of the many ways in which Jeffery — who is now an actor in Los Angeles and spoke to IndieWire via Zoom — confirmed that while Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” seems implausible and extravagant, it’s also shockingly accurate. Jeffery worked at Chippendales, both at the club and in the touring company, from the early 1980s until 1992 — right around when “excuse my expression: The shit hit the fan,” per Jeffery....

Director Joachim Trier clarified that his conclusion to his “Oslo” trilogy is a “character piece” about one specific woman — Julie, played by Renate Reinsve — and her journey to finding herself, not an analysis on modern feminism as a whole. “I did not want to make a general statement about what it means to be a woman today, that would be impossible,” Trier told Variety. “The fact of her being a woman eventually comes in to play by itself, through trying to portray truthful situations with humor and satire, and different things that I have experienced, seen or imagined....

The HFPA fell under intense scrutiny in 2021 for alleged improprieties in its voting process and for its startling lack of diversity, including featuring not a single Black voting member. The HFPA is made up of journalists who cover Hollywood and the entertainment industry for outlets primarily outside the United States. In response to these shortcomings, NBC canceled its broadcast of the 2022 ceremony until substantive change could be enacted, aiming for a return in 2023....
