First up is “The Queen’s Gambit,” the limited series about chess that became a global smash hit thanks to Anya Taylor-Joy’s evocative micro-gestures. With success typically comes sequels, and if, as originally intended, “The Queen’s Gambit” had been made in the ’90s, everyone would be demanding Season 2, with executives throwing money at writer-director Scott Frank to come up with more adventures for Beth Harmon & Co....

Using its website and membership lists to access target audiences, Kino Lorber began selling films through its Kino Lorber Marquee platform last March, starting with “Bacurau.” It also helped acclimate older viewers into seeing movies online. A year later, Kino Lorber has released 30 films via virtual cinema. According to its self reporting, shared with IndieWire, the platform grossed $1.2 million, with $600,000 going to some 50 arthouse theaters. That’s down from the estimated $2 million Kino Lorber grossed theatrically in 2019, but it’s a reasonable outcome in the face of theater closings....

That rubicon gets crossed awfully early in “Dr. Brain,” the newest Apple TV+ drama premiering this week. Lee Sun-kyun stars as Dr. Sewon Koh, a neurologist who’s been throwing himself into his life’s work, particularly after the latest in an ever-growing line of family tragedies. His chief invention? A machine that can transfer memories and consciousness from a dead brain to a living one. Before long, the death of a man he’s never met and the arrival of some unusual confidants lead Sewon to take drastic action and use the machine on himself....

Of course, this is hardly the beginning of the TV awards season in general. The past six months saw many accolades being distributed for both film and TV, including honors from the Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, and Screen Actors Guild, among others. As so often happens with these types of things, frontrunners began to appear on a number of, well, fronts, making it seem as though the the Emmy races in marquee categories — comedy series, drama series, limited series — might already be locked up, sapping the season of all its innate intrigue....

Wells Fargo had already seriously revised its target price for WBD stock from $42 to $19. The downgrade from “buy” to “hold” came immediately after Warner Bros. Discovery’s concerning second-quarter earnings report. In its first quarter as a combined company, Warner Bros. Discovery lost $3.4 billion. The company totally whiffed on Wall Street’s Q2 estimates for the combination of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc., sending the stock below $15. It has not passed that threshold in the month that followed....

The incident took place at Prikið Kaffihús, a pub in Reykjavik that Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, found themselves frequenting in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
